Simple Language
In its efforts towards accessibility, the Karlsruhe Academy of Art provides questions and answers about the Academy in simple language at this location.
What is an Art Academy for?
The Karlsruhe Academy of Art trains art teachers and independent artists.
Who can study at an Art Academy?
To study here, one must pass an entrance exam. You need to show that you can work artistically. Only then can you begin your studies.
What can you study at the Karlsruhe Academy of Art?
You can choose between two fields of study: Painting/Graphic Arts or Sculpture. However, this division is not very strict. Many painting classes also work with objects, and many sculptors also paint or draw. Additionally, you can also learn filmmaking and photography.
How does the study programme work?
The classes take place in a studio. The students are the learners. The teachers are artists and are called professors. You discuss artworks with them, but you also talk with your fellow students from the class about art. This brings new ideas, and you learn from each other.
Are the classes like in a school?
The classes are not like in school. Not everyone is the same age or at the same stage in their studies. Those who have been there longer help the new students. You have a workspace in the class studio. A workspace consists of a table, a chair, and a wall space. No one tells you what to do—you have to figure that out for yourself.
Who shows you how to paint or handle materials?
There are workshops for working with different materials. There are also workshop teachers there. They show you how to handle materials or machines.
Can you just walk into the Academy?
You can also visit the Academy if you are not a student. The students have exhibitions shortly before Christmas and just before the summer holidays. They showcase what they have been working on in the classes. You can look at everything—just like in a museum. Visitors are very welcome.
