The Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe is a distinguished, small art academy that focuses exclusively on two major courses of study: Diploma programme Fine Arts and Eductor of Fine Arts with specializations in Fine Arts or Intermedial Design (BA/MA). Guided by internationally acclaimed professors, just over 300 aspiring artists and art educators pursue their studies here across 16 classes encompassing classical disciplines like Painting, Sculpture, and Graphic Arts, as well as Film, Photography, Performance, Installation, and Media Art.
Central to the curriculum is the semester-long work carried out within the academy's spacious studios, generously spread across four buildings. A diverse teaching program of a total of 14 specialized workshops completes the practical studies in the class of an renowned art professor. Two exhibition spaces provide students with the opportunity to practice exhibition and curation techniques. The Intermedial Design course is conducted in collaboration with the esteemed Faculty of Architecture at KIT. A carefully selected international network of institutions allows for study abroad experiences through exchange programs.
In addition to practical coursework, theoretical subjects like Art History, Art Theory, Philosophy, Subject Didactics in Fine Art and Educational Sciences are offered, along with a vibrant lecture culture . The academy's well-equipped, on-site art library supports in-depth self-guided study. Committed to research-oriented teaching, the Academy of Fine Arts also offers a Ph.D. programme in Art history, Art Theory, Art Didactics, and Educational Sciences to foster emerging scholars.
