Fields of Study

Painting/Graphics and Sculpture

Since the 1960s, the State Academy of Fine Arts has concentrated on the artistic fields of Painting/Graphics and Sculpture as specialisations.  Formally there are Painting/Graphics and Sculpture professors or Painting/Graphics and Sculpture classes as well, but in practice these destinctions overlap.

Since contemporary art no longer permits such strict divisions, the transition between genres is fluid at the Karlsruhe Academy. In other words, a Painting class student can work three-dimensionally just as a Sculpture class student can focus on the two-dimensional surface. The same applies to Photography, Media or Performance Art. In all classes, these forms of artistic expression find their way into the curriculum - sometimes to a greater or lesser extent. Though, there are no special professorships or classes for these respective fields of study. Photography, Film and Media Art have corresponding workshops lead by professional workshop teachers available to the students.
