Schwartzerdt-Award

The Kunstverein Bretten regularly awards an exhibition prize along with financial support. The prize is called the 'Schwartzerdt-Award,' named after the famous son of the city. The reformer Philipp Melanchthon was born as Philipp Schwartzerdt in Bretten in 1497, and later took the name Melanchthon, which is the Greek translation of his family name. Melanchthon was Martin Luther’s closest associate and, like Luther, taught at the University of Wittenberg.

The awardee is selected during the prize presentation at the Annual Exhibition.
