Who can study at the Karlsruhe Academy of Art?
Applicants must demonstrate artistic talent or suitability. This is done through an entrance exam at the Karlsruhe Academy of Art. In general, applicants should be at least 17 years old and should not be older than 35. The admission requirements vary by programme. For the Educator of Fine Arts programme, the general university entrance qualification (Abitur) or an equivalent degree is required. It is also possible to start studying Fine Arts without an Abitur, but only after passing an entrance exam.
Does studying at the Karlsruhe Academy of Art cost anything?
The first degree at the Karlsruhe Academy of Art is free for German and EU citizens, aside from the semester fees. For second-degree students, international students from non-EU countries, continuing education students, and guest students, there are different fees.
Is there a Numerus Clausus (NC) for Art?
No. The admission to the programme is not based on the Abitur grade but on passing the entrance procedure. There is no waiting list.
How do I submit my portfolio?
A physical portfolio is no longer required. Instead, applicants upload digital work samples during the application process through the application portal. Only at the oral exam do you need to bring your physical portfolio with the original works.
How many study places are usually available in an application process?
The number of study places depends on the number of graduates. Typically, around 60 new students are admitted.
When does the semester start?
The semester always starts in the winter semester. The lectures begin around October 15th.
Are there courses for laypersons at the Academy?
No. The teaching at the Karlsruhe Academy of Art is focused on training professional artistic talent. However, there is an option for guest students, which involves fees and requires the consent of the relevant professor.
When can I see student works?
Student exhibitions are held regularly. The summer exhibition, with open studios, attracts external visitors to the Academy. The exhibition dates are listed on the website.
Can I borrow works of art?
If you want to temporarily furnish your office or practice with contemporary art, we are not the right address for that.

The university communications office sends a newsletter to interested individuals. To subscribe, you can email the central office of the Academy. The Tuesday lectures during the lecture period are open to the public, and admission is free.
Can I buy art at the Academy?

How can I support the next generation of artists?
The Karlsruhe Academy of Art is supported by an association of friends. New members are always welcome. The association annually awards six travel scholarships to students.
