Rector

Since October 2021, the Dutch artist Marcel van Eeden has been Rector of the Kunstakademie Karlsruhe. He had already held a professorship for painting at the university since 2014.

"As rector, it is crucial for me that the Kunstakademie Karlsruhe is a pleasant place for all of us. Everyone should feel comfortable and accepted. That is the basic prerequisite for good artistic work. Only then can the Kunstakademie deliver what is expected of it: meaningful studies and experiences from which its graduates will benefit throughout their artistic lives.

We are trying to make this happen by making the Academy increasingly transparent. Admittedly: Openness is a buzzword right now. But in our academy context it is particularly important. Everyone should be able to see how we work. Only this makes it possible for everyone to participate in our important artistic and necessary organizational processes. The sense of community carries us.

Art cannot be learned. At least not from books. But through years of joint work - in the studio community with fellow students from different semesters, in discourse with the professors, in the artistic-technical training in the workshops - one arrives at one's personal position in the continuous confrontation with the artistic content.

The conditions for this maturing process must be right, and solid structures create a basis for this. In my time as rector at the Kunstakademie Karlsruhe, it is my concern, together with my colleagues in the rector's office and all the employees of our university, to maintain, secure and further develop these conditions. This gives each of us the freedom to develop personally as well as artistically."
