Der kanadische Künstler Jeremy Shaw übernimmt ab dem bevorstehenden Wintersemester 2025/26 eine Bildhauerei-Professur an der Kunstakademie Karlsruhe. Er tritt durch seine Berufung die Nachfolge von Prof. Stephan Balkenhol an, der in den Ruhestand wechselte.
Jeremy Shaw arbeitet in unterschiedlichen Medien und untersucht veränderte Bewusstseinszustände sowie die kulturellen und wissenschaftlichen Versuche, transzendente Erfahrungen zu erfassen. Seine Installationen, Skulpturen und fotografischen Arbeiten verbinden Strategien des dokumentarischen Films, Konzeptkunst sowie der formalen Objektgestaltung, um die Übergänge zwischen Glauben, Wissenschaft und Kultur auszuloten.
In Shaws Werk verschmelzen Fakt und Fiktion nahtlos. Was auf den ersten Blick wie kulturhistorisches Archivmaterial erscheint, ist in Wirklichkeit sorgfältig konstruiert und spekulativ. Durch den Einsatz überholter Medien wie VHS und 16mm-Film sowie bewährter, handwerklich geprägter Materialien schafft Shaw Objekte und Bilder, die authentisch, aber auch verfremdet wirken. Die formale und materielle Klarheit seiner Arbeiten verbirgt konzeptuelle Verflechtungen, in denen sich das Sakrale mit dem Synthetischen verbindet und Grenzen zwischen Glauben, Wissenschaft und Hingabe auf ihre Durchlässigkeit hin befragt werden. So werden Welten jenseits zeitlicher Zuordnung erstellt, in denen Affekt und Analyse gleichermaßen koexistieren.
Jeremy Shaw wurde 1976 in North Vancouver, Kanada, geboren. Er zeigte zahlreiche Einzelausstellungen in international renommierten Institutionen, darunter in der Wiener Secession, Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, Julia Stoschek Foundation, Düsseldorf, Centre Pompidou, Paris, Schinkel Pavillon in Berlin sowie im MoMA PS1 in New York. Zudem war er Teilnehmer internationaler Überblicksausstellungen wie der 57. Biennale von Venedig und der Manifesta 11 in Zürich. Seine Arbeiten befinden sich in öffentlichen Sammlungen weltweit, darunter im Museum of Modern Art, New York, Centre Pompidou, Paris, Tate Modern, London, National Gallery of Canada sowie in der Sammlung zeitgenössischer Kunst der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, Bonn.

The Canadian artist takes over the sculpture professorship at the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts
Canadian artist Jeremy Shaw will take over a sculpture professorship at the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts starting in the upcoming 2025/26 winter semester. His appointment means he will succeed Prof. Stephan Balkenhol, who has retired.
Jeremy Shaw works across various mediums to explore altered states of consciousness and the cultural and scientific attempts to map transcendental experience. His installations, sculptures, and photographic works merge strategies of documentary filmmaking, conceptual art, and formal object-making to examine the grey areas between faith, science, and culture.
In Shaw’s work, fact and fiction merge seamlessly: what appears to be archival cultural documentation is, in fact, meticulously fabricated and speculative. Using outmoded media such as VHS and 16mm film, alongside canonical, craft-based sculptural materials, Shaw creates objects and images that feel both authentic and unstable. The formal and material precision of his works conceals conceptual hybrids that fuse the sacred with the synthetic and probe the porous boundaries between belief, science, and devotion. Shaw creates worlds out-of-time where affect and analysis coexist without hierarchy.
Jeremy Shaw was born in 1976 in North Vancouver, Canada. He has had numerous solo exhibitions at renowned international institutions including the Vienna Secession, the Musée d‘art contemporain de Montréal, the Julia Stoschek Foundation in Düsseldorf, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Schinkel Pavillon in Berlin and MoMA PS1 in New York. Shaw has taken part in various international survey exhibitions such as the 57. Venice Biennale and Manifesta 11 in Zurich. Jeremy Shaw's works are represented in public collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Centre Pompidou, Paris, Tate Modern, London, the National Gallery of Canada and the Sammlung zeitgenössische Kunst der Bundesrepublik, Bonn.
